Rose Wong, Ph.D., Research Assistant, works in Bio Rose Wong, Ph.D., Research Assistant, works in Biochemistry lab, 1958 at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr Wong later became a professor of biochemistry in the medical school.

Being in the oil and gas industry has become a tradition in her family, and Zarina is the third generation to work in that field. Zarina’s father inspired her by his example, and despite the stereotypes, she decided to pursue her career. ​ “My advice for women wanting to enter the STEM field would be to not be afraid to get uncomfortable. Often times, you may find opportunities that you think you can't do, but the truth is that you really can. Bring to the table your unique perspective and hard-earned talents and no one can reasonably refuse you a seat.”

She graduated with a B.S. in Applied Ecology from Arizona State University(ASU). She likes to start her days with a morning run. When she’s not at the lake or beach, her time is dedicated to conservation education and natural resources. Read below to learn how she got involved in natural resources and conservation and then give her a follow! 📸: @lauren.queenofthewild “I got into Natural Resources through a paid internship for a Herpetofauna technician with ASU. I was originally a Pre-Veterinary major. My degree plan and most vet schools required a internship. I procrastinated in finding the veterinarian internship because I knew veterinary [medicine] was not the right fit for me. I am glad I ended up becoming a Herpetofauna Research Technician because that summer changed my life. I spent the same summer growing more and more passionate and making observations. I was inspired to start my student #research project-Differing ectoparasite loads, sexual modes, and abundances of whiptail lizards from native and non-native habitats. I looked at ectoparasitic mite loads on Whiptail lizards in native and invasive habitats. I presented my research at SWPARC in 2018 after I graduated in 2017.”
Tsuneko Okazaki, together with her husband Reiji, Tsuneko Okazaki, together with her husband Reiji, discovered “Okazaki fragments” – short stretches of DNA that are formed in the process of DNA replication. These pieces were named in their honor by Rollin Hotchkiss during a meeting at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in 1968. The couple had met in Nagoya University and after obtaining PhDs, started a laboratory to conduct research on DNA replication. She and Reiji also conducted research as Fulbright fellows at Washington University and Stanford University and Tsuneko held Professor roles at Nagoya University and Fujita University. In 1975, Reiji passed away after developing leukemia from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and it was believed that Tsuneko would also stop working as a scientist to look after her two young children. But with support from those around her, she continued, furthering her research into RNA primers and other aspects of DNA, including in certain disease states. Okazaki has served as director of the Japan Society for Promotion of Science, Stockholm Office and the president and CEO of Chromo Research, Inc. She has received numerous honors including the L’Oreal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science in 2000 and was also elected as a Person of Cultural Merit in 2015. The same year, Nagoya University created the Tsuneko and Reiji Okazaki Award, "in honor of the spirit and legacy of Professors Okazaki."

My journey to become a NASA engineer started with a part-time internship at NASA when I was in high school. At the time, I was still in disbelief that NASA hired people so young! Until then I had thought of NASA as a place where smart older men worked (like I had seen in space movies). NASA’s workforce has come a long way from their early days in the space agency which really was mostly men. The number of women engineers in the agency continues to increase which is great! “As of 2012, women made up one third of all employees including 30% of supervisors and 20% of engineers. As of 2017, 37% of new hires are female and 50% of the newest class of astronauts were women. While these numbers may sound small, this is a significant increase in female employees at NASA compared to the last few decades.” Something else to appreciate is that Artemis – the next mission to the moon -will include a man and a WOMAN! ….. Bibha Chowdhuri (1913 –1991) was an Indian physi Bibha Chowdhuri (1913 –1991) was an Indian physicist who studied particle physics and cosmic rays. In 1936, she completed her M.Sc. degree in Physics at the University of Calcutta. After graduating, she joined the Bose Institute and together with Debendra Mohan Bose, discovered subatomic particles which later became known as mu-mesons. In 1945 she moved to the UK to complete her Ph.D. at the The University of Manchester. There, she studied cosmic rays and air showers, and was featured in the local papers as “India’s New Woman Scientist”. She discovered that when the particle density of an air shower increases, so does the density of penetrating events. Chowdhuri returned to India to join the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and later the Physical Research Laboratory (Ahmedabad) and was involved in the Kolar Gold Fields experiments. She later moved back to Kolkata and worked at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata until her death in 1991. Although she was never really recognized for her contributions at the time, her story is being highlighted now through books like “Bibha Chowdhuri: A Jewel Unearthed: The Story of an Indian Woman Scientist” by Rajinder Singh and Suprakash C. Roy. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has also named a star in the Sextans constellation “Bibha” in her honour.

Passionate about bioinformatics, her goals are to collaborate with other scientists and expand her network to show the positive potential of bioinformatics research in her country. Since joining the CTC in 2011, Deema has played an important role in studying the genetic prevalence for several diseases, including breast and ovarian cancers, in the Jordanian population using next-generation sequencing (NGS). Her research has also led to one of the first successful stem cell transplants to treat a diseased eye in the Arab region.

Esther Park (1876-1910) was born Kim Jeon Dong and Esther Park (1876-1910) was born Kim Jeon Dong and is known to be the first Korean woman to practice western medicine in Korea after receiving a medical education in the US (at the Women’s Medical College of Baltimore, where she graduated from in 1900). After her studies, she worked at Bogu-yogwan, a female hospital in Seoul which is now the @ewha.w.univ Medical Center. A year later she moved to Pyongyang then traveled the country treating the poor for free and promoting education for women, teaching the first generation of Korean female doctors. On April 28, 1909, Esther Park was presented with a silver medal by Emperor Gojong for her work. She has also been inducted to the Korean Science and Technology Hall of Fame by the KAIST. The Ewha University Alumni Committee has also established the Esther Park Award to recognize women who have graduated from the university and become doctors.
Reposting Rose de Guzman (@rose_neuro), a neurosci Reposting Rose de Guzman (@rose_neuro), a neuroscientist and postdoc at MGH/HMS researching how maternal health affects fetal and infant brain and immune development. ・・・ Did round 2 of Hofbauer cell isolation and after 12-13 hours, we ACTUALLY GOT CELLS!!!! Started early AM this time, so that we wouldn't be in lab until midnight again. The scary thing about these protocols is that you find out whether you've done well or not AFTER several hours (half way through) into the protocol. During that first half, you are questioning your method: Did we order and use the correct ingredients to make solutions? Did I extract the correct region of the placenta? Are my solutions cold enough? Etc. Etc. Etc. So many variables to control! And then you do a few to several more hours conducting the final steps, which are also the most critical. We're using a density gradient medium (Percoll) to isolate cells by density centrifugation. In less jargon: Basically spinning (using a centrifuge) all placental cells collected thus far in Percoll medium to separate the cells by their different densities. We then use tiny magnetic beads to further clean and only get the cells of interest (Hofbauer cells, in our case). The magnetic beads bind to all other cells we don't want and we're left with pure HBCs! Talk about a mixture of exhaustion, excitement, and anxiety the entire day! Still learning and fine tuning the protocol, but we're making progress! --- Photo 1: Holding a handy dandy pipet, which is used to accurately measure solutions from 1uL to 1000mL! Throwback to this summer’s adventures in Medicine Hat with the palaeo dream team ⚒🌄 This summer I was lucky enough to join ashinonyx in revisiting the historical fossil mammal sites in Medicine Hat, Alberta. We knew there were records of Ice Age mammals here, but most of them hadn’t been published on. Our job was to see what else we could find. 🌋❄️ Today, Ashley’s paper on the first Canadian occurrence of the Sabre-toothed cat, Smilodon fatalis, came out🇨🇦 🐅. The specimens described in the paper were found back in 1960s at the sites we visited this summer. Smilodon has been mostly found in the southern US in the past, which is why this paper is especially exciting! (check out that range expansion in pic # 7 😂) GO ASHLEY! Also, major shout-out to Henry Sharpe @nonotyrannus for his gorgeous illustration of a snowy Sabre-toothed cat😺

"In this photo, I just finished making a cranial window in the mouse skull. I use mice as a model to study how cortical activity in the brain changes 1) over adolescence and 2) as mice learn a task. These mice have been engineered to express a fluorescent protein whenever neurons are active, so I can put the mice under a microscope and record the activity from dozens of neurons while the mouse runs on a wheel. I'm still in the process of figuring out what analysis I want to do! I really like doing the surgeries and caring for mice but I'm learning over my PhD that neuroscience requires so much more than an understanding of neurobiology - I have a lot to learn about computer science, programming, and engineering still. I'm hoping this work will shed light on cortical brain states that may be more primed for learning. I'm really passionate about mental health. I have had depression since I was about 14, and it's really hard! I want science and academia to be a more inclusive place for those with mental illnesses. Science has a "publish or perish" mentality that reinforces unsustainable demands on productivity."

This group was part of a Swedish missionary visit to the region in the 1910s. Ether masks were devices used to deliver high-volatility anesthetics such as chloroform while preventing the anesthetic from touching the patient's skin.
Yvonne Adu-Agyeiwaah (@naagyeiwah) is a PhD studen Yvonne Adu-Agyeiwaah (@naagyeiwah) is a PhD student in the Vision Science Graduate Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She is an optometrist and originally from a beautiful country called Ghana in West Africa. Her research mainly focuses on cholesterol regulation mechanisms in diabetic retinopathy. This picture was taken in the course of performing Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA). This was being done to understand the patterns of changes in retinal blood flow.

The MSCL Podcast series continues with the tables The MSCL Podcast series continues with the tables switched, now with Dr Erin Hecht interviewing Dr Katherine Bryant! In 2017, Katherine works as a Post-Doc at Emory University in the Anthropology Department, where she studies plasticity in the brain in relation to learning, in collaboration with researchers in both anthropology and educational psychology. She talks about how her personal experiences influence the way she approaches this sort of research, issues and observations within neuroscience research and the way women scientists are treated in the field, her future plans, big unanswered questions in the neuroscience and neuroimaging, manatees, the role of science in society, and scientists getting involved in politics. This was still somewhere off the coast of Savannah in the middle of the Atlantic. We did a sediment grab and I swear I can smell the sulfur from this sediment as I type! Of course we dug through the sediment using some of the best tools around (read: silverware)...science can be unconventional which is what makes it so fun!!! Reposting Meghan Holst (@megholst), an aquarium bi Reposting Meghan Holst (@megholst), an aquarium biologist and PhD student studying sevengill shark ecology! ・・・ Sometimes science looks like tagging sharks, sometimes it looks like looking at octopus tissue under a microscope 🐙🔬👩‍🔬 For one of my studies, I evaluate the nerve, muscle, and epithelial tissue health of terminal octopus. Many octopus species are semelparous, meaning they only reproduce once, and it’s a terminal event. Similar salmon, octopus undergo extensive physical decline during this reproductive period. I study how extensive this deline is that isn’t obvious with the naked eye! 👁️🕵️‍♀️ To do this, I take octopus arm biopsies and cut them very thin (only 20 micrometers thick!). You can see a good example of a cross section in the second photo. I explain this cross section in-detail in a previous post!  I can then stain them to evaluate how much of the tissue is dying in the nerve cord, muscle, and skin. The third photo shows an example of what some of the stained cells look like on a suction cup! Check out my “octopus histology” highlights to see some of this process in more detail. 🐙🦑🧪🧫🔬
